The civilian Boeing 707 airliner first took to the skies in the late 1950’s and revolutionized air transport. The first use of a B-707 derived aircraft by the United States Air Force was the purchase and deployment of the C-137 transports and VC-137 VIP Presidential transports. In later years the Air Force added retired ex-airliners for use as transports and in anticipation of conversions for special use aircraft. Allied military forces around the world also recognized the value of the 707 and several were employed as trainers, transports and for mid-air refueling.
In later years as the major airlines retired the 707, the United States Air Force bought several ex-airliners for use as transports and flying test beds for new weapon systems development and command and communications systems. Several of these aircraft evolved into very unique and unusual aircraft but began their service in the United States Air Force in the C-18A configuration.
